ABOUT THE ARTIST - GLENN MARCEIL

I was a Pharmacist most of my life, but this was never where my heart was. I like to make things. My story parallels that of my father. He was in the insurance business but always had a workshop in the basement. In later years he left the insurance business and became one of the countries best miniature furniture and period miniature room makers until his premature death in 1981 of cancer. It was in these workshops and from him that I learned the majority of my woodworking skills. Over the years I have worked with the following:

bullet

painting

bullet

woodcarving

bullet

veneering

bullet

furniture building

bullet

cabinet making

bullet

speaker making

bullet

house building (my own 1st house)

At the age of 50 I retired from Pharmacy. I spent several years doing some remodeling of our house, including a movie room and an entirely new kitchen. When I finished, my plans were to start making something beautiful out of wood, then fate stepped in during a vacation to Sedona, Arizona. There I saw a segmented southwest style bowl at an art gallery and was instantly fascinated. I had to try and make one but didn't even own a lathe yet! After making my first segmented bowl I knew this is what I wanted to do the rest of my life. That was May 2003.

I am self taught with the help of the internet, a few books and trial and error. What I love about this type of turning is its endless creative and technical potential. It also plays to some of my strengths: knowledge of geometry, patience (read perfectionist), a love of symmetry and of course - WOOD!

With the support ($) and encouragement of my loving wife (a practicing Pharmacist) I hope to continue for many years.

I live in Winston Salem, NC with my wife Linda. My oldest son is an electrical engineer in Raleigh and my youngest is in College at Wilmington, NC (2 or 3 cats are somewhere in the house).
